Alen Müller-Hellwig rare tapestry Iris 1940s Bauhaus style rare
Alen Müller-Hellwig (1901-1993) - iris tapestry, natural and dyed wool, handspun. Iris on a green background, 56 x 90 cm/ 22.04" x 35.43" (without fringes, length incl. ringes approx. 107 cm/ 42.12"). Made in the early 1940s, from the series of tapestries with plants. motifs.
Another carpet of this series, 'foxglove', was bought in 1947 by the Grassi Museum, Leipzig. 'Aaron's rod' (1946) was bought in 1950 by former German chancellor Konrad Adenauer for the Palais Schaumburg, Bonn, further purchased in 1954 by the Ministry of Economics, Kiel.
About the artist: Studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Hamburg under Paul Helms and Maria Brinckmann and the Kunstgewerbeschule München under Else Jaskolla. Workshop for hand weaving in Lübeck (1926-1991), from 1934 in the castle gate (tower and the eastern adjoining Zöllnerhaus). Orders by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for Villa Tugendhat, the Barcelona Pavilion and buildings in Paris and Milan. Participation in the world exhibitions in Chicago 1933 and 1937 in Paris. Art Prize of the State of Schleswig-Holstein (1954).
